Afghan National Charged in Murder of West Virginia National Guard Soldier

WASHINGTON, D.C. – December 2, 2025 – Federal prosecutors in the District of Columbia announced charges Tuesday against Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal in connection with the murder of West Virginia National Guard soldier Spc. Sarah Beckstrom.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed that charges were also filed in the ambush shooting of SSgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was injured in the attack. The case is being prosecuted in D.C. Superior Court, with support from federal law enforcement agencies.
Officials say the charges mark a significant step in pursuing justice for Beckstrom, Wolfe, and their families. Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a statement praising the swift action of the Department of Justice, Attorney General Pam Bondi, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, and D.C. authorities. “Their work to hold this alleged terrorist accountable is an important step toward delivering justice,” Morrisey said.
The Governor added that West Virginia will continue to stand with the families of the victims, their fellow Guardsmen, and all who are grieving. Lawmakers across the state echoed his remarks, emphasizing the risks faced by service members and the importance of accountability.
The investigation remains ongoing as federal and local authorities coordinate efforts to prosecute the case.
