America250 Wheel Arrives at State Capitol as Construction Gets Underway

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The America250 Wheel — the world’s tallest portable Ferris wheel — has arrived at the State Capitol Complex, marking a major milestone in preparations for West Virginia’s Capital City Celebration honoring America’s 250th anniversary.

Crews began load‑in Thursday morning, with construction starting immediately after the wheel’s arrival. Media outlets were invited to cover the setup and were asked to complete the Media Credential & Coverage Form in advance.

“The America250 Wheel will provide a one‑of‑a‑kind experience for West Virginians and visitors from across the country as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday,” Governor Patrick Morrisey said. “This attraction is just one example of the exciting events planned as we honor our history, celebrate our freedoms, and showcase everything that makes West Virginia special.”

Standing 230 feet tall, the wheel will serve as the centerpiece of the state’s four‑day celebration July 2–5 in Charleston. It features 45 gondolas — each representing a U.S. president — with seating for six riders and the capacity to move up to 1,600 guests per hour. From the top, riders can see up to 14 miles across the Capital City.

At night, a 256‑color LED lighting system will illuminate the wheel, creating a new focal point on the Charleston skyline throughout the celebration.
