Beckley, WV – (WWNR) – Hundreds of people lined the streets of downtown Beckley Saturday morning for the return of the city’s annual Christmas Parade. Last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a reverse parade was held at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. This year, the traditional parade followed the traditional route thru the downtown area.
This year’s theme was “Gingerbread House Christmas,” with local businesses, churches and organizations providing their examples. There were also familiar characters, like the Winter Princess, Clara from The Nutcracker, the Grinch, the Chick-Fil-A Cow and the Coca Cola Bear. There were also marching bands, dance troupes, classic cars, fire trucks and emergency vehicles. As always, the parade finished with Santa and Mrs. Claus, in a sleigh provided by Beckley ARH Hospital.
Other activities Saturday included Tickety Boo Mercantile’s Open House, featuring sales, door prizes, artists and refreshments. The Raleigh Playhouse and Theater had vendors set up in its lobby to sell popcorn and other items. Holy O’s sold mini doughnuts and hot chocolate in Word Park. Coffee On Main was open and offered gingerbread decorating for kids after the parade. And there was caroling by the cardinals statue in the plaza at the corner of Neville and Heber Streets.
