WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito on Wednesday praised the National Science Foundation’s decision to select the Resilient Energy Technology and Infrastructure Consortium — led by West Virginia University — as one of 12 Regional Innovation Engines nationwide. The consortium includes WVU, the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and more than 60 regional partners.
The RETI Consortium will leverage $321 million in public and private funding to build a national hub for industrial energy innovation in Appalachia. The initiative aims to strengthen regional economic growth by developing resilient energy technologies and expanding advanced manufacturing opportunities.
Capito, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, said she advocated for WVU throughout the competitive selection process. “I’m incredibly proud of WVU’s leadership in securing the RETI Consortium right here in Appalachia,” Capito said. “This investment will spur economic opportunities and create good‑paying jobs through the development of resilient energy and industrial technologies.”
She added that the project builds on West Virginia’s long history as an energy leader and positions the region to meet growing national demand for new energy solutions.
The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program is designed to accelerate research, workforce development and commercialization across key industries. Capito said she looks forward to working with WVU and its partners to ensure the consortium’s long‑term success.
