APPLE GROVE, W.Va. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito has received Nucor Steel’s first‑ever “Woman of Steel” award during a tour of the company’s Apple Grove facility, recognizing her long‑standing support for American manufacturing and the steel industry.
Nucor leaders praised Capito’s role in advancing the company’s major investment in Mason County, calling her an advocate who consistently backed the project at critical moments. Nucor Chair and CEO Leon Topalian said Capito “embodies what this award represents,” noting her efforts to strengthen domestic manufacturing and support workers and families across West Virginia.
Capito said she was honored by the recognition and highlighted the importance of keeping West Virginia competitive for industrial growth. She said Nucor’s presence in Mason County demonstrates the strength of the state’s workforce and the economic impact of large‑scale manufacturing projects.
Nucor officials said the “Woman of Steel” award is the company’s most prestigious honor for individuals outside the organization. Created in the early 2000s, it is reserved for partners who have gone “above and beyond” in support of American manufacturing and the Nucor family.
