“Charge into Fire Safety” Theme Announced for Fire Prevention Week 2026

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to keep fire safety in mind as they power up their everyday devices. Officials announced that the theme for Fire Prevention Week™, October 4–10, 2026, is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Fire departments across West Virginia are partnering with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to highlight simple, life‑saving habits when charging phones, tablets, laptops, tools, toys, e‑bikes, scooters, and other devices powered by lithium‑ion batteries.

Lithium‑ion batteries store significant energy in a small space. When damaged or improperly charged, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode. State Fire Marshal Ken Tyree says safe charging comes down to everyday choices.

“The way you charge your lithium‑ion battery devices can make a difference in helping prevent home fires,” Tyree said. “It comes down to using simple habits each time you plug in.”

Key Safe‑Charging Tips

  • Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces — not beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Stop using any device that feels extremely hot, is swelling, smoking, or has an unusual odor.
  • Unplug devices once fully charged to reduce heat and battery stress.
  • Charge larger items like e‑bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits.
  • On airplanes, keep devices visible while charging and never charge e‑cigarettes or vapes.

The Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents to support local fire departments as they promote safe‑charging practices throughout Fire Prevention Week.
