CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Hunters in southern West Virginia will have an early opportunity to head into the woods as the state’s early bear firearms season begins Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The first early segment of the season runs from August 29 through September 7, and is limited to four counties: McDowell, Wyoming, Logan and Mingo. Wildlife officials say the early season helps manage bear populations in areas with higher densities and provides additional hunting opportunities ahead of the traditional fall season.
Hunters must have a valid West Virginia hunting license and the appropriate bear stamp before participating. A license is not required for hunters pursuing bear on their own property.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources also reminds hunters of a long‑standing requirement: all successful bear hunters must submit a first premolar tooth from their harvested bear to the agency by January 31 of the following year. The tooth provides biologists with age and health data used to monitor the state’s bear population.
More information on season regulations and requirements is available through the WVDNR.
