GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. (AP) — Interstate 64 has reopened after a tanker‑truck crash released an estimated 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel near the Sam Black Church exit, prompting a major emergency response and hours‑long shutdowns in both directions.
The spill occurred Tuesday when a tanker overturned, leaking fuel across the roadway and forcing immediate closures of the eastbound and westbound lanes. Crews from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, local fire departments, and hazardous‑materials teams worked throughout the day to contain the spill and prevent contamination of nearby waterways.
Officials said no serious injuries were reported. Traffic backups stretched for miles as responders off‑loaded remaining fuel, removed the damaged tanker, and began environmental cleanup.
By late Tuesday night, containment and testing were complete, and both directions of I‑64 reopened. The DEP confirmed that no significant contamination reached local streams or drainage systems.
Drivers are being asked to use caution through the area as shoulder cleanup and inspections continue. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
