Raleigh County Board of Education Releases Agenda for Sept. 23 Meeting Amid Ongoing School Closure Concerns

RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. — Raleigh County Schools has released the agenda for its next Board of Education meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 10:15 a.m., where officials will formally receive impact statements and set public hearings on proposed school closures and consolidations affecting multiple elementary schools.

The agenda outlines four major items under new business, beginning with the superintendent’s presentation of an Impact Statement and Supporting Data regarding the proposal to close Cranberry‑Prosperity Elementary School and merge its students into Bradley Elementary, Maxwell Hill Elementary, and Stanaford Elementary. The board is also expected to schedule public hearings on the proposal.

A second set of impact statements will address the proposal to close Mabscott Elementary School, merge its students into Crescent Elementary and Hollywood Elementary, and relocate the Severe Disabilities program from Hollywood Elementary to Beckley Elementary School. Public hearings for this proposal will also be scheduled.

The meeting comes as parents from all affected schools continue to voice strong opposition to any potential closures or consolidations. Families have packed recent board meetings, citing concerns about overcrowding, transportation, program stability, and the long‑term impact on their communities.

The board is expected to make all impact statements available to the public following the meeting.
