Teachers Raise Mold Concerns at Mount View High

WELCH, W.Va. — Mold inside Mount View High School became a major point of concern during Tuesday’s McDowell County Board of Education meeting, where teachers urged officials to address what they say is an ongoing health hazard.

Mount View educator Brooke Ball told board members her aunt, who also teaches at the school, was hospitalized on September 2 with acute bronchitis. Ball said doctors attributed the illness to mold exposure inside the building and advised her aunt not to return until the issue is resolved.

“She was admitted to the ER for acute bronchitis, and they contribute it to mold exposure,” Ball said during the meeting. “She is not allowed back into the school building until they fix the mold problem. That’s what the doctor said.”

Teachers said this is not an isolated incident, and several staff members have reported respiratory issues they believe are linked to conditions inside the school.

The district has not yet released details on remediation plans or timelines.
