BECKLEY, W.Va. — Federal prosecutors have charged twelve people in a multi‑state drone‑smuggling operation accused of delivering drugs and contraband into federal prisons, including FCI Beckley.
Investigators say the group used drones to drop packages containing synthetic drugs, cellphones and other prohibited items into recreation yards and unsecured areas. The coordinated flights allegedly spanned several states and were timed to avoid detection by correctional staff.
Prosecutors say the case reflects a growing trend of drone‑based smuggling targeting correctional facilities nationwide, raising concerns about security vulnerabilities and the flow of illicit substances behind bars.
