CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As communities across West Virginia recover from flooding and severe weather, the Department of Health is reminding families that help is available through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
The Department says WIC participants who’ve lost access to reliable cooking equipment, refrigeration, or storage can request a “Limited Cooking Facilities” food package — designed to provide nutritious, shelf‑stable options that require minimal preparation.
“Recovery is about rebuilding homes and restoring what was lost, but it’s also about caring for the people and families who are working to put their lives back together,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Arvin Singh. “Making sure WIC families have better access to food means one less thing they have to carry during an already difficult time.”
The modified package is available in all 55 counties and may include items such as evaporated milk, nonfat dry milk, baked beans, and pre‑prepared foods like hard‑boiled eggs.
Families whose cooking or storage abilities have changed due to storm damage are encouraged to contact their local WIC clinic to discuss eligibility. The Department also advises checking with approved retailers, as some stores may have adjusted hours or limited inventory during recovery efforts.
