$65 Million Awarded for Kanawha County Bridge Projects

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — West Virginia is set to receive $65 million in federal transportation funding to replace and rehabilitate two major bridges in Kanawha County, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito announced Friday.
The funding—awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program—will support the full replacement of the Dunbar Toll Bridge and the rehabilitation of the Kanawha Turnpike I‑64 overpass. Both projects fall under the West Virginia Division of Highways’ West Kanawha Bridge Bundle, a multi‑bridge improvement effort in the Kanawha Valley.
Senator Capito, who chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said she helped secure the funding through the 2024 and 2025 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bills.
In a statement, Capito said she was “pleased that funding from the bridge program that I helped establish during the appropriations process will support the much‑needed replacement of the Dunbar Toll Bridge.” She thanked Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for approving the grant and said the investment will “improve safety and the movement of people and goods across the Kanawha Valley.”
The Dunbar Toll Bridge, which spans the Kanawha River between Dunbar and South Charleston, has been a priority for replacement due to age and structural concerns. The Kanawha Turnpike overpass, which carries traffic over I‑64, is also slated for significant rehabilitation to extend its lifespan and improve safety.
Capito said she looks forward to continuing to work with federal partners to secure additional infrastructure funding for West Virginia.
