$7.4 Billion Purdue Pharma Settlement Finalized; West Virginia to Receive Over $50 Million

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, has officially taken effect, marking one of the largest opioid‑related resolutions in U.S. history.

West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey announced the deal Friday, saying the state will receive more than $50 million over nine years — an accelerated timeline recognizing the state’s disproportionate impact from the opioid crisis.

The settlement permanently bars the Sacklers from selling opioids in the United States and transfers Purdue’s manufacturing operations to a new company, Knoa Pharma, under independent oversight.

Funds will be distributed through the West Virginia First Foundation to support prevention, treatment, and recovery programs statewide.

The Sacklers and Purdue will also release more than 30 million documents detailing their opioid business practices.
