Beckley, WV- Southern West Virginia is still recovering from this week’s round of ice and snow, and forecasters say another winter storm is set to move in this weekend. Crews have spent days clearing debris, restoring power, and treating slick roads after ice accumulations and bursts of heavy snow created hazardous travel across the region. Warming centers in several counties remain on standby as temperatures stay well below freezing.
A new system is expected to arrive Saturday and continue through Monday, bringing additional accumulating snow to much of the state. The National Weather Service warns that even moderate snowfall could quickly worsen road conditions, especially in areas where ice remains on secondary and untreated surfaces.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Boone, Fayette, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh, Wyoming, Kanawha, and Pocahontas counties from Saturday morning through early Monday. Forecasts call for three to eight inches of snow across the southern counties, with nine to fourteen inches possible in Kanawha and Pocahontas counties. Light icing and wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour may lead to falling branches and isolated power outages.
A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, and Summers counties, where a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain could make travel difficult to impossible at times. Emergency officials are urging residents to prepare now, limit travel during the height of the storm, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.
