CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Secretary of State Kris Warner has announced that ballot position drawings for the May 12 Primary Election will take place Tuesday, February 24, at 9 a.m. in all 55 counties.
Under West Virginia law, each County Clerk is responsible for conducting the drawing that determines the order in which candidates’ names appear on the ballot. The process is required for any race with more than one candidate and must be done by random selection. The event is open to candidates or their representatives.
“This event is the next phase of preparing for the Primary Election,” Secretary Warner said. “Yet another procedure built into law for transparency and fairness, each County Clerk manages the random drawing to order candidates’ names in their presence.”
Warner said his office certified the final list of state and federal candidates on February 20 and distributed it to county clerks. Nearly 2,700 candidates will appear on ballots for the May 12 Primary.
