Capito Cuts Ribbon on WVU School of Dentistry Renovations

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito returned to West Virginia University’s School of Dentistry on Wednesday to help cut the ribbon on a major renovation and expansion project funded through federal appropriations she secured.

Capito, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, delivered keynote remarks during the ceremony. The upgrades were supported by a $12.6 million Congressionally Directed Spending award in Fiscal Year 2024 and an additional $15 million award in Fiscal Year 2026. The funding allowed the school to modernize facilities, expand clinical and instructional space, and purchase new dental equipment.

Capito said the investment strengthens education and expands access to dental care across West Virginia.

“This ribbon-cutting represents a significant investment in education in West Virginia,” Capito said. “By modernizing this facility and providing students and faculty with the tools and technology they need, we are helping prepare the next generation of dentists while expanding access to quality dental care for families across our state.”

WVU School of Dentistry Dean Dr. Stephen Pachuta said the improvements will have long‑term statewide impact. More than 85 percent of dentists practicing in West Virginia are graduates of the school.

“Our commitment to education, community service, and patient care is strong,” Pachuta said. “This renovation and expansion project is transformational for West Virginia. It will strengthen our educational base while helping expand access to care throughout the region.”

The School of Dentistry is the only dental school in the state and serves as a key provider of oral health training and clinical services.
