Capito Honors WV National Guard Members After D.C. Attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R‑W.Va.) delivered a speech on the Senate floor Monday honoring two members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot while serving in Washington, D.C.
Capito paid tribute to U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who died on Thanksgiving Day at just 20 years old, and offered prayers for U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, who remains hospitalized in critical condition.
“This was a deliberate, senseless act of violence, an attack not only on two individuals, but on the very values and the country they took an oath to protect,” Capito said.
She described Beckstrom as a “peacemaker” and praised her leadership and spirit, noting that her service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. Capito also spoke of Wolfe’s strength, calling him “a fighter” and emphasizing that West Virginians and Americans across the country are praying for his recovery.
Capito recognized the broader National Guard community, including Major General Bill Crane, for their steadfast support of the families affected. She said the attack has deeply shaken the Guard but highlighted their continued dedication to serving the state during times of crisis.
The senator announced plans to introduce a resolution to formally honor Beckstrom and Wolfe, saying they represent “the very best of our state, the very best of the National Guard, and the very best of America.”
