Congressman Nick Rahall – Episode 5

In this reflective episode, Dr. T. Ramon Stuart welcomes longtime West Virginia Congressman Nick Joe Rahall to discuss a life dedicated to public service, the power of community, and the value of remembering where we come from. Raised in Beckley and the grandson of Lebanese immigrants, Rahall shares a journey that began with family business and radio broadcasting and eventually led to 38 years representing southern West Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rahall recounts how his early experiences, selling shoes in his family’s shop, DJing on WWNR, and managing natural disasters in office, shaped his understanding of local needs and the importance of humility in leadership. He speaks about the four T’s that guided his work: transportation, tourism, technology, and teamwork. These pillars led to landmark legislation like the creation of the New River Gorge National Park and critical infrastructure investments that still benefit the state today.

The episode also highlights the Nick Joe Rahall Congressional Archives on WVU Tech’s campus, a living tribute to West Virginia’s history of civic engagement and resilience. The archives house documents and artefacts spanning Rahall’s career, from early legislation to memorabilia from the 1960 Democratic National Convention and tributes to veterans and coal miners.

Rahall shares what he hopes his legacy will be: that he tried his best to serve the people and improve their lives.
