Fayette County Animal Shelter Seeks Public Help After Flooding Causes Major Damage

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — The Fayette County Animal Shelter is asking for public assistance after weekend flooding left the facility without power, water, and caused significant damage, forcing staff to temporarily close the shelter.

According to a statement posted on the shelter’s Facebook page, employees, county officials, and state partners are working to safely access the building and assess the full extent of the damage. The shelter said floodwaters made the facility unsafe, and crews are determining the best path forward for repairs and long‑term recovery.

With the building closed, the shelter is seeking help from rescues, shelters, fosters, and adopters to provide temporary or permanent placement for the animals currently in its care. Officials said community support will be critical to ensuring the animals remain safe while the facility undergoes cleanup and restoration.

The shelter plans to release additional updates as assessments continue.
