Fayette County Candidate Challenges Primary Results

FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. — A Fayette County Republican committee race may be headed for further review after candidate William Vest formally challenged the results of the May primary, citing concerns over dozens of ballots that election officials say may not have been legally cast.

According to the Fayette County Clerk’s Office, 38 ballots have been flagged for potential irregularities. Officials have not publicly detailed the nature of the issues but confirmed the ballots could be significant enough to alter the outcome of the race, which was decided by a narrow margin.

Vest filed an official challenge requesting a full examination of the questionable ballots. He argues that the integrity of the election depends on ensuring every vote counted meets state requirements.

“I’m simply asking for a fair review,” Vest said in a statement. “If these ballots are improper, they should not determine the outcome of this race.”

County election officials say they are following the procedures outlined in West Virginia law, which allows candidates to contest results when irregularities could affect the final tally. The review process may include verifying voter eligibility, examining ballot envelopes, and determining whether any procedural errors occurred at polling locations or during early voting.

If the review confirms that the number of questionable ballots exceeds the margin of victory, the county may order a recount or take additional corrective action. Officials say they expect to make a determination in the coming days.

The challenge comes as counties across West Virginia continue to navigate close races and increased scrutiny of local election procedures. Officials emphasize that the review is routine and part of maintaining transparency and public trust.
