Governor Morrisey announces $637,000 in infrastructure grants for Beckley-area projects

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey joined local officials in Uptown Beckley on Friday to announce $637,000 in federal and state infrastructure grants supporting five pedestrian, trail and community‑development projects across Raleigh, Fayette and Summers counties.

“Not all infrastructure is highways,” Morrisey said during the event. “Sometimes it’s a sidewalk that helps a child get to school safely. Sometimes it’s a revitalized Main Street that brings people back downtown. Those investments improve quality of life, strengthen local economies, and build the kind of communities where families want to live, work and raise the next generation.”

The funding comes through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program and the Recreational Trails Program, in partnership with local municipalities. Projects include:

  • City of Beckley — $125,000: Design and engineering work for new sidewalks along Main Street to improve safety and accessibility in Uptown Beckley.
  • Town of Fayetteville — $387,500: Construction of the Second Avenue Pedestrian Bridge to reconnect historically separated neighborhoods ($325,000), plus $62,500 for sidewalk upgrades.
  • City of Hinton — $75,000: Design work for a major sidewalk modernization project stretching from Pleasant Street and Second Avenue west to Main and Washington streets.
  • Twin Falls Resort State Park — $50,000: Design of a new paved quarter‑mile nature trail near the lodge, aimed at improving access for seniors, families with strollers and visitors with mobility challenges.

Morrisey said the improvements complement broader economic growth statewide. Since October, his administration has announced $12.8 billion in private‑sector investments, projected to create more than 13,600 jobs.
