Governor Morrisey Announces Back‑to‑School Sales Tax Holiday to Deliver Relief for West Virginia Families

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey highlighted West Virginia’s upcoming Back‑to‑School Sales Tax Holiday during a visit to Greenbrier County, emphasizing his administration’s focus on lowering living costs and supporting families as they prepare for the new school year.

The Governor acknowledged that back‑to‑school season brings both excitement and financial pressure for families. “Between new shoes, clothes, backpack essentials, and modern classroom tech, the costs stack up quickly,” Morrisey said. He added that his goal is to “get government out of the way and put more of your hard‑earned dollars back in your pocket.”

The four‑day tax‑free weekend begins Friday, July 31, and runs through Monday, August 3, 2026. During this period, West Virginians will be exempt from the state’s 6% sales tax on a wide range of qualifying back‑to‑school items:

  • Clothing & footwear: $125 or less per item
  • School supplies: $50 or less per item
  • Instructional materials: $20 or less per item
  • Sports equipment: $150 or less per item
  • Laptops & tablets: $500 or less per device

Last year, West Virginia families saved more than $3.5 million during the holiday, and administration officials expect even greater participation this year.

Morrisey said the initiative is part of a broader effort to make life more affordable for West Virginians. Recent actions include a 5% across‑the‑board personal income tax cut and $230 million in annual tax relief statewide.

“We’re doing more than just saving families a few bucks at the register,” Morrisey said. “We are investing in our children’s future, backing our local Main Street businesses, and building a stronger, more resilient West Virginia.”
