Governor Morrisey Appoints Erin Hunter as West Virginia Insurance Commissioner

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey has appointed longtime state insurance official Erin Hunter to serve as West Virginia’s next Insurance Commissioner. Her appointment becomes effective July 1, following the retirement of Commissioner Allan L. McVey.

Morrisey said Hunter’s extensive experience within the Offices of the Insurance Commissioner makes her well‑suited to lead the agency.

“Erin Hunter has spent more than a decade serving West Virginians through the Offices of the Insurance Commissioner and has earned a reputation as a knowledgeable and effective leader,” Morrisey said. “I am confident she will build on the agency’s strong foundation, and I thank Allan McVey for his years of dedicated service to the people of West Virginia.”

Hunter joined the agency in 2012 as Legal Regulatory Counsel and later advanced to General Counsel and Deputy Insurance Commissioner. Throughout her tenure, she has been involved in regulatory oversight, legislative policy work and day‑to‑day agency operations affecting insurance consumers and businesses statewide.

A graduate of West Virginia University, Hunter holds bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and English, as well as a Juris Doctor from the WVU College of Law.

McVey, who was appointed Insurance Commissioner in 2017, also served as Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Administration before returning to the agency in 2021. His retirement is effective June 30.
