Governor Morrisey Honors National Guard Members Ambushed in Washington, D.C.


Flags lowered statewide as West Virginians pause to remember Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Governor Patrick Morrisey has called on all West Virginians to observe a statewide moment of silence or prayer today at 2:15 p.m. to honor Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, two members of the West Virginia National Guard who were ambushed while serving in Washington, D.C.
Morrisey issued a formal proclamation ordering flags to be flown at half‑staff following the death of Specialist Beckstrom, 20, of Summersville. Wolfe, 24, of Martinsburg, remains hospitalized after the November 26 attack near the Farragut West Metro Station.
“These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked,” Morrisey said. “Their courage and commitment to duty represent the very best of our state.”
The governor noted that the Guardsmen were mobilized earlier this year in response to a directive from President Donald J. Trump, who ordered additional National Guard personnel to assist in addressing violent crime in Washington.
Swift action by nearby Guard members and law enforcement stopped the attacker and prevented further violence.
