Governor Morrisey Issues Statement After Fatal Mining Incident in Wyoming County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a statement Thursday following a fatal incident at the Lower War Eagle Mine in Wyoming County, near the community of Cyclone.
State officials confirmed that one miner was killed in the incident, marking the sixth mining fatality in West Virginia so far this year. The mine is operated by Colorado Coal LLC.
The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training responded to the site Thursday morning and has launched a full investigation.
In his statement, Governor Morrisey said he and his wife, Denise, were “deeply saddened” by the loss and extended condolences to the miner’s family, coworkers, and community.
“Each day, West Virginia miners perform difficult and demanding tasks,” Morrisey said. “They do this to provide for their families, to build the communities, and to forge a better future for the next generation of West Virginians.”
The governor asked residents across the state to keep the miner’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
