Hometown Hall of Fame Concert to Kick Off Appalachian Festival

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The first Hometown Hall of Fame Concert will open the Appalachian Festival on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026, at Word Park in downtown Beckley. The event begins at 1 p.m. and celebrates Southern West Virginia’s musical legends Bill Withers, Calvin Simon, Little Jimmy Dickens, Everett Lilly and Hazel Dickens.

The featured performers are The Holler Generals, an Appalachian acoustic trio with Matt Mullins, Randy Gilkey and Alex Bair. The group blends bluegrass, folk, old‑time country and mountain storytelling in a two‑hour set from 1 to 3 p.m., including songs from the Hall of Fame artists and their own originals.

Festivalgoers can expect food, music and family fun throughout the afternoon. Organizers will also unveil designs for five new artwork banners honoring the Hall of Fame members. Each 10‑by‑20‑foot banner will be installed on the State Building on Neville Street near Word Park, accompanied by interpretive signage and a “music pole” that plays select songs.

Sponsors include the Beckley Area Foundation, Carter Family Foundation, Raleigh County United for Prevention, Raleigh County Commission, Visit Southern WV, State of West Virginia, Beckley‑Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Beckley.
