House Committee on Education Advances on Three Bills

Charleston, WV- The House Committee on Education advanced work on three bills Monday, each aimed at strengthening higher education and academic partnerships in West Virginia.
House Bill 4081 would create the Higher Education Health and Aid Grant, directing the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to establish a statewide program supporting students facing food, health, and hygiene insecurities. Lawmakers say the goal is to improve student well‑being and boost academic success by helping colleges meet basic‑needs gaps on campus. The bill was recommended for passage but must first be reviewed by the House Finance Committee.
House Bill 4087 would expand the West Virginia‑Ireland Trade Commission to include an education component, forming a West Virginia‑Ireland Education Alliance. The partnership would promote academic, cultural, and workforce exchanges between institutions in West Virginia and Ireland. It also allows for grants to support collaborative programs. The bill was also sent to Finance with a recommendation that it pass.
House Bill 4002 would establish the West Virginia Collaboratory, a new statewide research and innovation hub. The bill outlines the Collaboratory’s powers, funding structure, and advisory board, with the goal of coordinating research efforts and supporting economic development. Lawmakers advanced the bill through markup for further discussion.
