WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump has approved a Major Disaster Declaration for West Virginia, unlocking federal assistance for communities hit hard by severe storms, straight‑line winds, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, and mudslides between July 21–22, 2026.
The declaration makes federal funding available to individuals and families in Lewis and Upshur counties, where damage assessments confirmed significant losses. FEMA says assistance may include grants for temporary housing, home repairs, low‑cost loans for uninsured property damage, and additional programs designed to support long‑term recovery.
Residents in the designated counties are urged to file insurance claims first, then apply for federal assistance through:
- DisasterAssistance.gov
- 1‑800‑621‑3362
- The FEMA App
Individuals using relay services such as VRS or captioned telephone should provide FEMA with their relay service number.
FEMA has named Mark K. O’Hanlon as the Federal Coordinating Officer overseeing recovery operations. Officials note that additional counties may be added if ongoing assessments show further qualifying damage.
