BECKLEY, W.Va. — The West Virginia Public Service Commission is recommending a reduced water‑rate increase for Beckley Water Company customers after reviewing months of financial data, customer feedback and utility filings.
The utility originally requested a higher rate adjustment to cover rising operational costs, infrastructure upgrades and long‑term system maintenance. But after evaluating the company’s financial projections and public comments submitted during the case, the PSC staff recommended a lower increase, saying the revised amount more accurately reflects the utility’s immediate needs while easing the burden on households.
The recommendation now moves to the next stage of the regulatory process, where commissioners will determine whether to adopt the staff proposal, modify it further or approve the company’s original request. If the PSC approves the revised rate, the new pricing structure would take effect later this year.
Beckley Water Company serves thousands of customers across Raleigh County and portions of surrounding communities. Many residents voiced concerns during the public comment period, citing inflation, fixed incomes and the cumulative impact of rising utility costs. PSC staff noted those concerns in its filing, emphasizing the need to balance affordability with the utility’s responsibility to maintain safe and reliable service.
The utility has argued that rate adjustments are necessary to keep up with aging infrastructure, regulatory requirements and increased costs for treatment chemicals, equipment and labor. Beckley Water has also pointed to ongoing capital projects aimed at improving water quality and system reliability.
The PSC’s final decision will be issued after commissioners review all testimony, filings and recommendations. Customers can follow updates through the PSC’s online docket.
