RALEIGH COUNTY, W.Va. — Raleigh County Schools is evaluating whether to close multiple schools ahead of the upcoming academic year, prompting concern among parents and community members who say they fear the impact on classrooms and student services.
Rumors circulating on local social media groups have suggested that Mabscott Elementary and Cranberry‑Prosperity Elementary may be among the schools facing possible closure. When asked for clarification, Superintendent Dr. Serena Starcher did not confirm specific schools but acknowledged that closures are under consideration.
“Raleigh County Schools is currently exploring the possible closure of schools,” Starcher said in a statement. “At this time, no additional information is available.”
The uncertainty led several parents to address the issue during a recent Raleigh County Board of Education meeting. Some said they worry that closing schools could worsen what they describe as already overcrowded classrooms. Others raised concerns about losing programs unique to certain schools, including services for children with special needs.
Parents also questioned how potential closures might affect transportation, staffing, and access to specialized resources that smaller schools currently provide.
The district has not released a timeline for when decisions may be finalized or when additional information will be made public.
