Scott Robinson and Heather Short – Episode 19

Empowering Students Through TRIO: A Conversation with Scott Robertson and Heather Short

In this episode of Our Communiversity Today, Dr. T. Ramon Stuart, president of WVU Tech, is joined by Scott Robertson and Heather Short, leaders of the university’s federally funded TRIO programs. Together, they explore how these vital educational initiatives are transforming lives by providing targeted support for first-generation college students, individuals from low-income families, and those with documented disabilities.

Scott and Heather share their personal journeys and how TRIO shaped their own educational paths. Scott participated in the program as a student, while Heather now helps administer the very support she wishes she had in college. They explain the history and scope of TRIO, including WVU Tech’s two active programs: Upward Bound for high school students in Fayette and Raleigh counties, and Student Support Services for enrolled college students. Both programs are offered free of charge and are designed to help students build confidence, achieve academic success, and prepare for life beyond the classroom.

Listeners will hear powerful transformation stories of students who went from isolation and self-doubt to becoming thriving campus leaders through TRIO’s guidance. Through summer bridge programs, real-world experiences, mentorship, and academic workshops, these initiatives provide not only essential knowledge, but also a community of support that carries students through their educational journey and into successful careers.

Dr. Stuart closes the episode with a reminder: for every dollar invested in TRIO programs, the return to local economies is more than $13. These programs are more than support systems, they are powerful engines of opportunity.
