Senate Passes Budget Bill for Upcoming Fiscal Year, Now moves to House of Delegates

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Senate has passed its version of the Budget Bill, advancing one of the most important pieces of legislation of the session as lawmakers work toward finalizing state spending for the upcoming fiscal year.
The bill outlines funding levels for public education, higher education, health and human services, corrections, and key economic development initiatives. Senators highlighted investments in workforce development, infrastructure, and child welfare services, while also maintaining reserves and keeping the overall budget structurally balanced.
Debate on the floor centered on agency needs, rising operational costs, and the long‑term sustainability of state programs. Some lawmakers raised concerns about staffing shortages in corrections and health care, while others pushed for additional support for public schools and regional service agencies.
The Senate’s budget now moves to the House of Delegates, where lawmakers will compare it with their own priorities. Both chambers must ultimately agree on a final version before the end of the regular session. Any differences will be resolved through negotiations or a conference committee if needed.
Once approved by both chambers, the budget will be sent to the Governor for review and possible line‑item vetoes.
