Southern West Virginia Housing is asking the community to donate reflective safety gear to help protect individuals experiencing homelessness and others who walk along local roadways. The organization says the request comes as pedestrian‑related accidents have increased in areas with limited lighting, where drivers often cannot see people until they are dangerously close.
Officials say the need is urgent, noting that many residents walk out of necessity due to a lack of transportation. Reflective items can significantly improve visibility and reduce the risk of being struck by a vehicle.
The organization is requesting donations of reflective armbands, vests, tape, and clip‑on or wearable safety items. Monetary contributions are also welcome and will be used to purchase reflective gear in bulk. Each item distributed will include a small card recognizing the sponsor for supporting the safety of vulnerable community members.
Donations may be dropped off at Southern WV Housing, located at 2955 Robert C. Byrd Drive in Beckley.
The organization says even a simple reflective band can make the difference between being seen and being injured.
