West Virginia Legislature Opens 2026 Session With More Than 200 Bills Expected on Day One

Charleston, WV-The West Virginia Legislature convenes its 2026 Regular Session at noon on Wednesday, January 14, launching a 60‑day period of lawmaking that is expected to move quickly and cover a wide range of issues. Legislative leaders say more than 200 bills are anticipated to be introduced on the first day alone, signaling an active start to the session.
Lawmakers will begin reviewing proposals related to economic development, education, public safety, infrastructure, and health care, along with several carryover issues from last year. The Senate is also set to introduce its first slate of bills Wednesday, marking the formal kickoff of committee assignments, public hearings, and early floor debates.
The session is expected to draw significant public interest as legislators outline their priorities and begin shaping policies that will impact communities across the Mountain State throughout 2026.

The Senate will convene at noon. The State of the State address begins at 7 p.m. in the House Chamber.
