Beckley, WV- Crews across Southern West Virginia are still working to repair widespread ice damage after the weekend winter storm snapped trees and power lines, leaving tens of thousands without electricity at its peak. Appalachian Power reports the hardest‑hit areas include Kanawha County, along with surrounding counties such as Boone, Putnam, Clay, Roane, Lincoln, Fayette, Nicholas, Raleigh, Logan, Mingo, and Wyoming. Ice accumulation in many of these areas reached up to a quarter‑inch, weighing down trees and utility lines.
Road conditions remain slick on secondary routes, though major interstates are largely passable. Utility and highway crews continue clearing debris, restoring power, and treating trouble spots, but officials warn that lingering cold temperatures may slow progress and create additional hazards. Residents are urged to limit travel and use caution as recovery efforts continue.
