CHARLESTON, WV – The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) has accepted bids for a project to rehabilitate the eastbound and westbound spans of the Oakvale Bridge in Mercer County. The bridges, built in 1972, carry U.S. 460 over Fivemile Creek and serve about 10,400 vehicles daily.
The work will include replacing concrete bridge decks, converting abutments to semi‑integral structures to eliminate expansion joints, repairing deteriorated concrete, spot painting steel girders, and applying protective coatings. WVDOH State Bridge Engineer Tracy Brown said the project will extend the service life of the structures and maximize the original taxpayer investment.
The Oakvale Bridge project was one of 11 construction projects included in the December 9 bid letting. Other projects span counties across the state, including culvert repairs, slide repairs, trestle improvements, and bridge replacements. Bids are reviewed against engineer estimates and awarded within about a week, though the process can take longer.
