WVDOH awards contract for next section of Coalfields Expressway

CHARLESTON, WV – On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) awarded a contract to build a three-mile connector road between Pineville and Twin Falls State Park, the latest section of the Coalfields Expressway to go under contract.

Triton Construction Inc. was awarded the contract for $72,520,000. The contract was awarded from a bid letting conducted by the WVDOH on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

“This project represents our commitment to continue progress on the Coalfields Expressway,” said West Virginia Transportation Secretary Stephen Todd Rumbaugh, P.E. “By building a 0.52-mile connector road to Twin Falls State Park and also constructing three miles of two-lane mainline from just outside of Pineville tying back in at Cabin Creek Road, the project creates greater mobility and safety in the area along with easier access to Twin Falls State Park.”

Also known as US 121, the Coalfields Expressway is a four-lane highway that will eventually connect Beckley in Raleigh County with Pound, Virginia. Roughly 60 miles of the approximately 110-mile four-lane will travel through Raleigh, Wyoming and McDowell counties, providing much-needed access to the communities of Sophia, Pineville, Welch and Bradshaw.

The Coalfields Expressway is intended to improve interstate commerce, reduce travel times, and foster economic development in the Appalachian region and to open the coalfield region by improving access for industry and tourism.

A 14-mile stretch of the Coalfields Expressway from Sophia to Mullens is currently open to traffic. Construction is underway on the 5.12-mile section from Welch to WV 16.
