CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With summer travel season underway, the West Virginia Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that orange barrels mean progress. Transportation officials met Monday with local agencies, first responders, school administrators, and business leaders to discuss the upcoming Interstate 64 Fort Hill Truss Bridge Rehabilitation Project, also known as the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge.
The deck replacement project will extend the life and safety of the bridge while minimizing traffic impacts, Transportation Secretary Stephen T. Rumbaugh, P.E. said. “Routine repairs are needed to extend the life of our infrastructure,” Rumbaugh said. “We recognize that many drivers associate summer travel with orange barrels, but those barrels mean progress.”
The once‑in‑a‑generation project includes replacement of the bridge deck and barrier walls, repairs to the steel arch, and repainting of the concrete piers. Bids for the project open June 9, with construction scheduled to begin this fall. Lane and ramp closures will be required, and detours will be posted.
Officials encourage drivers to plan ahead, expect delays, and use the project website — i64forthillbridge.com — for updates throughout construction.
