BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech’s Kenny Howell has been named the 2025‑26 River States Conference Athletic Director of the Year, earning the honor for the second time in his career. Howell, who previously received the award in 2019‑20, was selected by fellow athletic directors across the conference.
Howell has spent nearly 20 years with WVU Tech Athletics, serving as a student‑athlete, coach, sports information director, compliance administrator and, since 2013, director of athletics. Colleagues say that broad experience has shaped a leadership style centered on collaboration, service and a deep commitment to student‑athletes and staff.
Under Howell’s leadership, WVU Tech recorded one of its strongest years in program history. The men’s soccer team advanced to the NAIA National Championship match, finishing as national runner‑up with a 20‑1‑2 record. The department also celebrated its first CSC Academic All‑American®, multiple NAIA All‑Americans, national qualifiers in swimming, track and field and the NAIA Marathon Classic, and postseason appearances across several sports. WVU Tech’s esports program also reached multiple conference semifinals and national quarterfinals.
Howell’s influence extends beyond campus. He serves as vice chair of the River States Conference Administrative Council, conference golf liaison and a member of the Conduct Committee. In southern West Virginia, he is treasurer of the YMCA of Southern West Virginia and a board member of the Beckley‑Raleigh County Convention Center.
Known as a steady leader and strong advocate for student‑athletes, Howell is widely regarded as a trusted colleague who prefers to spotlight the accomplishments of others. Conference officials said his dedication to the mission of collegiate athletics exemplifies the qualities recognized by the Athletic Director of the Year award.
